How accurate a photo is at counting calories

Published 2 min read

A photo is an estimate, not a scale. Where it goes wrong most often and how to fix an entry in one sentence.

Taking a picture of the plate is the fastest way to log. But a photo does not know what you know, and the honest answer to “how accurate is it” is “it depends”.

What a photo shows well

  • What the food is, when it lies apart: chicken, rice, vegetables, an egg.
  • Roughly how big the portion is — from the plate and the cutlery next to it.
  • Simple dishes made of two or three plain foods.

On plates like that the estimate is usually close to the truth.

What a photo does not show

  • Oil. A tablespoon of oil is about 120 kcal, and it is not in the picture. Fried food, a dressed salad, porridge with butter — the main source of error.
  • Sugar and sauces. Sweet tea and tea without sugar look the same.
  • What is inside. Soup, stew, the filling of a pie, a smoothie — the model guesses the contents.
  • The real weight. The same portion in a deep bowl and on a flat plate looks different.

That is why Kalorika does not pretend it measured: when the model is not sure it says so, and you can come back to the entry.

How to help the photo in one sentence

Add what cannot be seen. In the same chat, in plain words:

  • “fried in a tablespoon of oil”;
  • “it was 200 g, not 100”;
  • “tea with two spoons of sugar”;
  • “that is yoghurt, not sour cream”.

The entry is recalculated and replaces the old one. It takes ten seconds and removes the biggest error.

When a photo is not the best way

  • The dish is yours and you know what is in it — write or say it; words are more accurate.
  • The product has a package — the barcode gives the maker’s numbers.
  • You eat it often — log it carefully once, then repeat it with one command.

Do you need accuracy at all

For a diary, the accuracy of one entry matters less than logging every day in roughly the same way. An error of 10–15 % on a plate that repeats hardly stops you seeing where your weight is going. Skipped days and “forgotten” oil do.

Where a mistake can harm you — allergens, a medical diet, a dose of medication tied to food — do not rely on an estimate from a photo.
