How not to give up a food diary after a week

Published 2 min read

People drop a diary not from laziness but because it costs too much. How to make an entry a ten-second job, and what to do after a gap.

In the first week, logging food is interesting. In the second it is tiring. By the third the diary is usually empty. It is almost never about willpower: an entry simply costs too much, and one day the price outweighs the use.

Make an entry cheap

The aim is for an ordinary meal to be logged in ten seconds.

  • A photo — when the food is on the plate and there is no time to think.
  • One sentence — when you know what you are eating: “oatmeal, 60 g, with milk and a coffee”.
  • A barcode — for anything in a package.
  • A repeat — for what you eat often. For most people ten to fifteen dishes cover nearly the whole week; log them once and repeat with one command after that.

You do not need to weigh every lettuce leaf. Weigh once what you eat all the time, and that is enough.

Log straight away

Logging “from memory” in the evening loses a third of the day: snacks, a spoon of oil, what you finished off your child’s plate. Taking a picture of the plate before eating is easier than remembering it six hours later.

Log the bad days too

The most common end of a diary is a day you do not want to write down. Then another. Then coming back feels awkward.

But those are exactly the days the diary needs to see. An entry is not a verdict, it is an observation: without the “bad” days the weight line stops matching the diary and the diary becomes useless. Write it down as it was and move on.

Do not chase accuracy

A diary that is 10–15 % off and kept every day is more useful than an exact one kept every other day. If an entry took more than a minute, you are making it harder than it is. A guess by eye beats a gap.

After a gap

Missed a day, three, a week — do not “start on Monday” and do not rebuild the past. Just log the next meal. A diary is not reset by a hole.

Give yourself a reason to look

Logging for its own sake is dull. Interest comes when the diary shows you something:

  • how much is left for today — right before dinner;
  • the weight line — where it is really going;
  • the weekly review — what worked and what did not.

If you look at the numbers at least once a day, logging stops being a duty: it becomes a way to get an answer.

When you do not need a diary

You do not have to keep one for life. Two or three months give you the main thing: you begin to know how much is in your usual food, and after that you can keep a diary now and then. And if counting brings anxiety or guilt, that is a reason to stop, not to discipline yourself harder.
